Medicare in Sun City Center

What Sun City Center residents should know

Sun City Center started in 1961 as a Del Webb retirement community, and most residents are 65 or older. That makes Medicare part of daily life here. The hospital in town is HCA Florida South Shore Hospital on Sun City Center Boulevard. It runs a 24/7 emergency room and offers cardiology, stroke care, orthopedics and urology. For larger cases, many residents go north to St. Joseph's Hospital-South or AdventHealth Riverview, or into Tampa for Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center.

Check where your care actually happens before you pick a plan. If you see doctors at South Shore and a specialist at Moffitt, an Advantage HMO has to cover both, or you need a plan with out-of-network benefits. Many residents choose a Medicare Supplement for the opposite reason. Plan G or Plan N works anywhere in the country with providers who accept Medicare, which helps if you spend summers up north. The monthly premium is higher, and you add a separate Part D plan for drugs.

The community has its own safety net. The Sun City Center Emergency Squad is an all-volunteer group founded in 1964. From its station on Ray Watson Drive, it runs a free ambulance service around the clock, wheelchair van rides to appointments and blood pressure checks. Call 813-633-1411 with non-emergency questions, and call 911 in an emergency. HART also runs a South County flex route through Sun City Center on weekdays.

Golf carts can use most community streets in daylight, but doctor visits outside the community still need a car or a ride. The Sunshine Line, 813-272-7272, takes qualified seniors to medical appointments. The SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin is the closest county library. Common questions

Medicare questions from Sun City Center

Is there a hospital in Sun City Center?
Yes. HCA Florida South Shore Hospital is on Sun City Center Boulevard with a 24/7 emergency room. Check that it is in network if you choose a Medicare Advantage plan, along with any Tampa specialists you see.
I spend summers up north. Which plan type fits?
A Medicare Supplement often fits better, because Plan G or Plan N works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. Some Advantage plans have travel benefits, but the rules differ by plan, so read them before you leave for the summer.
Does the Emergency Squad change which plan I need?
No. The volunteer squad describes its ambulance service as free, and it is not a Medicare benefit. Your plan still decides what you pay for the emergency room and any hospital stay that follows.
