Medicare in Plant City

What Plant City residents should know

BayCare opened the new South Florida Baptist Hospital on May 18, 2024, on a campus at Park Road and Sam Allen Road. It replaced the older building on Alexander Street and has emergency beds, private rooms and a cardiac cath lab. HCA Florida also runs a freestanding emergency room in Plant City, and HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is to the west.

If you picked a plan while the old hospital was open, check your directory again. Look for South Florida Baptist by name and confirm your doctors moved with it. Many Plant City residents also see specialists in Brandon or Tampa, so list every doctor before you compare. An Advantage HMO keeps you to its network. A Medicare Supplement lets you see any provider who accepts Medicare, for a higher monthly premium.

Plant City sits at the east edge of the county, so rides take planning. The Sunshine Line, 813-272-7272, takes qualified older residents to medical visits. If you no longer use a car, call HART at 813-254-4278 to ask about routes near you. Some Advantage plans include rides to appointments, so ask before you enroll.

The city runs Bruton Memorial Library, part of the county library cooperative, with free computers for Medicare.gov tasks. Social Security tasks such as Part B sign-up can be done at ssa.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, call Florida SHINE at 1-800-963-5337.
