Medicare in Apollo Beach

What Apollo Beach residents should know

Apollo Beach is a community of canals that open to Tampa Bay. The nearest hospital is HCA Florida South Shore Hospital in Sun City Center. St. Joseph's Hospital-South and AdventHealth Riverview are to the north, and Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center are in Tampa.

Those hospitals belong to four different systems, so a Medicare Advantage HMO will not include all of them. Start with the hospital you would want in an emergency and the specialists you see most. Confirm each one by name in the plan directory. Most Advantage plans include Part D, so check your drugs at the same time.

If you split the year with a home up north, a Medicare Supplement often fits better than an HMO. Plan G or Plan N works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare, with no network to check. Some Advantage plans offer travel or visitor benefits, but the rules differ by plan, so read them before you leave for the summer.

For local help, the Ruskin Senior Center on 6th Street SE is the closest county senior center, and the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin is the county's largest branch. The Sunshine Line, 813-272-7272, provides rides to medical visits for seniors who qualify. Each winter the TECO Manatee Viewing Center on Dickman Road opens free to visitors from November 1 to April 15. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, call Florida SHINE at 1-800-963-5337.

Want a second set of eyes on your coverage? Call us for a free plan review. We check your doctors, your drugs and your budget against the plans we offer in Apollo Beach, all over the phone. Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7. That is the time to recheck whether your doctors stay in network next year.

Next steps: compare Medicare Advantage with Medicare Supplement plans, check your Part D drug costs, or map your turning-65 timeline.
