Medicare in Riverview

What Riverview residents should know

Riverview has grown fast, and hospital care has followed. St. Joseph's Hospital-South on Simmons Loop is a full BayCare hospital with an ICU and surgery. AdventHealth Riverview on US Highway 301 runs a 24/7 emergency room for adults and children. HCA Florida also runs a freestanding emergency room in Riverview, tied to its Brandon hospital. That is three different systems in one community, with Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center up in Tampa.

That is why the network question comes first here. An Advantage HMO may include St. Joseph's-South but not AdventHealth Riverview, or the other way around. Look up your family doctor, your specialists and the emergency room you would use. A Medicare Supplement skips the network question. Plan G or Plan N works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. You pay a higher monthly premium for that, so compare the yearly cost both ways.

Veterans have a VA clinic in town. The Tampa VA runs an outpatient clinic on Summerfield Crossing Boulevard, and James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital handles hospital care in north Tampa. VA care and Medicare are separate. Many veterans keep Part B so they can also see community doctors. Bring your VA details to a review and we will show how each option fits.

For rides, HARTPlus provides door-to-door service where HART routes run. Call 813-254-4278 a day ahead. The Sunshine Line takes qualified seniors to medical visits at 813-272-7272. The Riverview Public Library on Balm Riverview Road moved into a new building in 2021 and has free computers for Medicare.gov and Social Security tasks. For free counseling, call Florida SHINE at 1-800-963-5337.

Common questions

Medicare questions from Riverview

Which hospitals are in Riverview?
St. Joseph's Hospital-South, run by BayCare, and AdventHealth Riverview. HCA Florida also runs a freestanding emergency room here. Each one belongs to a different system, so check the one you prefer in any Advantage plan.
Does Medicare work with my VA care?

When can I change my Riverview Medicare plan?
Anyone with Medicare can switch during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one more change during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31.
