Medicare in Brandon
What Brandon residents should know
Brandon has a full hospital close to home. HCA Florida Brandon Hospital on Oakfield Drive runs a 24/7 emergency room and is a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, with heart, vascular and cancer care on the same campus. It used to be called Brandon Regional Hospital, so older paperwork may still use that name. To the south, BayCare runs St. Joseph's Hospital-South in Riverview and AdventHealth runs AdventHealth Riverview on US 301. Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center are in Tampa. Your doctors may belong to one of these systems or to several.
That mix shapes your plan choice. A Medicare Advantage HMO usually keeps you inside one network, except for emergencies. If your heart doctor is with HCA Florida and your surgeon is with BayCare, check that both are in the plan before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement works another way. Plan G or Plan N lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no referrals. You pay a monthly premium for that freedom. Drug coverage differs too. Most Advantage plans include Part D. With a Supplement, you buy a separate Part D plan, so check that your drugs and pharmacy are on its list.
Getting to appointments takes some planning. HART buses serve Brandon, and riders who show a Medicare card pay a reduced fare. HARTPlus offers door-to-door rides for people who cannot use the regular bus. Book a day ahead at 813-254-4278. The county's Sunshine Line also takes older residents to medical visits. Call 813-272-7272 to ask if you qualify.
Local help is close by. The Brandon Senior Center on North Parsons Avenue is a nationally accredited county center with meals, classes and social programs. The Brandon Regional Library sits on Vonderburg Drive, and the county plans a new library on Lumsden Road. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, Florida SHINE volunteers answer through the Elder Helpline at 1-800-963-5337.
